The SG-543 is a variant of the SG-540 5.56x45mm Assault rifle, except it is chambered for the powerful 7.62x51mm cartridge. It was made as a potential replacement for the SG 510 Assault Rifle in the early 1970s. This variant of the SG-540 features a shortened 300mm barrel and different handguards and sights than the SG-540. Because of it's reduced size, the Bipod and rifle grenade launcher do not fit on the SG-543
